2016 Summer Nationals

Smashing records and overcoming obstacles in Oregon

The greater Portland area heated up even before 1,287 Masters swimmers arrived ready to race at the Mt. Hood Aquatic Center August 17–21 for the 2016 USMS Summer National Championship. But the 100-plus degree temperatures couldn’t slow determined competitors as 58 USMS individual and 14 relay records fell over the course of the five-day event. Competitors also felled 35 FINA Masters world records.

Bill Fleming swims Masters at the Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club in Sewell, N.J. Twice a week, the 67-year-old environmental engineer also hits the weight machines at his gym. “I can build strength without having to spend as much time in the pool,” he says. Fleming swears that pumping iron makes him swim faster.
